About the Business
What they offer: A thoughtfully selected mix of vinyl records, fashion, plants, self-care items, baby products, gifts, home goods, and more. All chosen with quality, ethics, and style in mind.
Unique approach or specialty: Most of their products are Canadian-made or ethically sourced, often plastic-free or made from recycled materials. Their approach is rooted in sustainability, community connection, and creative expression. You won’t find another store like it! Whether you’re crate-digging for records or hunting for a beautiful, useful gift, this downtown gem invites you to browse, connect, and enjoy something a little different.
Their story: Alanna has been in retail since the beginning of her working life, with experience ranging from running a flower shop in Squamish to owning 14 different businesses over the years. She and her husband Kevin have worked together for over 25 years, combining their individual passions: his for music, hers for design, fashion, plants, and creative expression.
Modern Alchemy came to life when the two decided to turn their shared dreams into something tangible. Kevin had always wanted to open a record shop, and Alanna had a vision of curating a space filled with beautiful, useful things that reflect her love for colour, texture, nature, and art. The name “Modern Alchemy” is a perfect reflection of their journey; about blending their different strengths to create something entirely new.
After moving back to the Kootenays, the couple saw a gap in the local market and an opportunity to build something meaningful in Creston’s downtown. Alanna, who now calls herself a “recovering serial entrepreneur,” is proud to have slowed down to focus on her two businesses.
