Name: The Pottery On Canyon

Owner(s): Kait Mckenna

Short bio: The Pottery is Creston’s downtown clay haven; a bright, welcoming studio where anyone can roll up their sleeves, get a little messy, and discover the joy of working with their hands. From wheel-throwing and hand-building classes to kids camps and memberships, it’s a space where creativity takes shape, no perfection required.

About the Business

What they offer: The Pottery is home to a wide range of experiences for all ages and skill levels; wheel-throwing classes, hand-building workshops, kids pottery camps, make-a-mug nights, and memberships for independent makers. It’s not just about making mugs and bowls, it’s about learning, experimenting, and connecting with others in a relaxed, encouraging atmosphere.

Unique approach or specialty: Founded by local potter Kait McKenna, The Pottery reflects her background in archaeology, with a love for rustic, ancient-inspired forms and old-world textures. Kait’s approachable teaching style means you don’t need any experience to join in, just curiosity and a willingness to play with clay. You don’t need to be perfect to create something beautiful. Here, clay is the teacher and everyone, whether brand new or seasoned, is the student.

Their story: Kait’s pottery journey began in 2016, as a new mom seeking a creative outlet and adult conversation. What started with lopsided pots in a Victoria studio grew into a deep love for clay and the craft’s endless lessons.
When she returned to Creston in 2018, she set up a wheel in her parents’ basement, selling her early work online and at local markets. Demand grew, lessons followed, and soon Kait had outgrown her home studio. In 2022, with the help of her husband, family, and friends, she transformed a 100-year-old heritage building into The Pottery on Canyon. The journey wasn’t without frozen pipes, a broken furnace, and plenty of late nights, but the community’s warmth and support kept the vision alive.
Today, The Pottery has become more than Kait ever imagined; a place where friendships are forged, challenges are worked through, and creativity flows freely. Its members range from beginners to long-time potters, all drawn by the same thing: the joy of creating and the connections that come with it.
If you’ve ever wanted to give pottery a spin, literally, this is your sign to stop by, sign up for a class, or ask about memberships. You might just discover a new skill, a new friend, or a whole new way to slow down and enjoy the process.
